Terms of Service

Welcome to The Daily Chess Puzzle (the "Activity"), a Discord Activity that serves one chess puzzle per day and tracks player ratings. By launching the Activity inside Discord, you agree to these Terms.
This is a personal hobby project operated by a single developer. For any question about these Terms, contact dailychessdev@proton.me.
1. Eligibility
You must comply with Discord's own Terms of Service, including the minimum-age requirement (13 years old, or higher where required by local law). You must use the Activity only from a Discord account you own.
2. The service
The Activity is provided free of charge, "as is" and "as available". It serves the daily chess puzzle sourced from the public Lichess API, records your attempt on our server, and displays a leaderboard to members of the Discord server where the Activity was launched.
We make no guarantee that the Activity will be available, error-free, or bug-free. We may change, pause, or discontinue the Activity at any time without notice.
3. Acceptable use
You agree to not:
- Attempt to bypass the once-per-day lockout (e.g. by tampering with local storage, replaying network requests, or creating alternate Discord accounts for the sole purpose of stacking ratings).
- Submit forged results for yourself or any other user, scrape or enumerate other users' data, or otherwise abuse our API endpoints.
- Attempt to gain unauthorized access to our server, database, or any other user's account.
- Use automated tools, bots, or scripts to interact with the Activity in ways not intended by the design.
- Upload or inject content intended to harm other users — including malicious payloads in your Discord username or avatar.
- Use the Activity for any illegal purpose or in violation of Discord's Terms of Service or Community Guidelines.
We reserve the right to disable your access to the Activity (by banning your Discord user ID from submitting results, or by asking Discord to remove the Activity from your account) at our sole discretion, without notice, if we believe you have violated these Terms.
4. User-generated content
The Activity does not accept user-generated content beyond what Discord itself already provides (your username, display name, and avatar). We do not claim any ownership over those. You remain solely responsible for the content of your Discord profile as it appears in our leaderboard and channel cards.
5. Intellectual property
The source code of the Activity is the work of the developer.
The daily puzzles are sourced from Lichess and subject to
Lichess's own terms. The Inter font is licensed under the
SIL Open Font License 1.1. The chess.js and
react-chessboard libraries are MIT-licensed.
6. Privacy
Your privacy is covered separately by our Privacy Policy. By using the Activity, you acknowledge the data handling described there.
7. Disclaimer and limitation of liability
The Activity is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, in no event shall the developer be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising out of or relating to your use of (or inability to use) the Activity, including but not limited to: loss of Elo rating, loss of leaderboard position, data corruption, missed daily streaks, or any perceived unfairness in puzzle difficulty.
This is a free hobby project. The total aggregate liability of the developer for all claims related to the Activity is limited to the amount you paid to use it, which is zero.
8. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms when the Activity changes. Material changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date at the top. Continued use of the Activity after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
9. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which the developer resides. Any disputes not resolvable informally will be submitted to the competent courts of that jurisdiction. This does not affect any non-waivable rights you have under your local consumer protection laws.
